In the summer of 2015, Anne-Marie Leake, the parent of a rising 6th grader at Byrd Middle School, and Jordan Chapman, a Hermitage High School student, began two independent efforts to encourage the Henrico County School Board to rename Harry Flood Byrd Middle School, due to Byrd's opposition to desegregation and the detrimental effect that his policy of Massive Resistance had on public education in Virginia. Several months later, Anne-Marie, Jordan, and other concerned citizens joined forces to continue the pursuit of this change.
